With schools being sparse, the Q’ero children must often travel long distances to be able to attend. Sometimes several hours in one direction, through rough and cold terrain. The children want an education but this is made difficult because of insufficient government assistance and often their parents will keep them home to help in the villages. The few teachers that don’t wish to live in such a remote place must travel back and forth several times a week. Sometimes coming from as far as Cusco, a seven hour journey by car and an additional four hours on foot.
The Q’ero migrate between villages periodically, depending on the season. Growing corn in the lowlands during the summer months and potatoes in higher altitudes during the cold winter. Hatun Q'ero, Peru.

    Q'ero priest and his Chakitaqlla.

For centuries, Andres’ people have inhabited one of Peru’s most remote mountain regions. The Paqo’s of Hatun Q’ero, who act as the community’s spiritual leaders and knowledge keepers, are becoming fewer with the passing of time. The younger generations are no longer interested in their ancestors way of life. Hatun Q'ero, Peru.
